Golden Gate Theater in San Francisco
History and Location
Officially opened in 1922, the Golden Gate Theater is an iconic performance venue that is situated at 1 Taylor Street in San Francisco, CA. The theater was built between the years 1920 and 1921. It was designed by the reputable American architect G. Albert Lansburgh for the theater circuit – RKO-Radio-Keith-Orpheum. At the time of its opening, the Golden Gate Theater was a vaudeville house. Its opening that took place in March featured 7 vaudeville acts. The venue was later transformed into a movie theater, one of the most prominent in the region.
Some of the notable personalities that performed at the venue include Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, The Andrew Sisters. Ethel Waters, Roy Rodgers, Frank Sinatra as well as The Three Stooges. It was then converted by RKO into a film venue in 1954 when it was leased to Cinerama Corporation. In order to transition from a vaudeville venue into a film venue, there are a number of changes that needed to be made.
Despite the transformation of the Golden Gate Theater into a film theater, business still declined. After suffering heavy losses over time, RKO decided to shut down both theaters in the year 1972. SHN later reopened San Francisco Orpheum and the Golden Gate. SHN was owned by Robert Nederlander and Carole Hays and was a successful theatrical company at the time. The production company purchased the theater in 1979 and embarked on refacing the entire theater.
Renovations
The interior architectural design of the Golden Gate Theater was completely brought down in a move to turn it into a film venue. There are also several other renovations that were done. The theater’s central marble staircase was destroyed and replaced with a modern escalator. To further enhance its visual appeal and make it more ideal for a film theater, neon lights were installed in various places around the theater. During the 1960s, the Golden Gate Theater got twinned, a process that involved dividing the massive theater into two theaters. The balcony theater that was realized from the twinning was renamed Penthouse Theater.
Another phase of renovation that the Golden Gate Theater underwent was under the ownership of SHN. They commenced complete renovation of the theater with the aim of turning it into a theater for hosting musicals and plays. A Chorus Line was the very first performance that was presented by the new owners of the theater. This became the first performance hosted at the venue after about 25 years. This was followed by several other presentations of Broadway shows. Some of the popular shows that were hosted at the venue under SHN include Hair Spray, Mamma Mia! Chicago, Rent and Sweeney Todd.
The exterior of the theater was renovated too. The most prominent upgrade was the installation of a modern digital marquee that has a twin-blade flanking.
