Aladdin, the Broadway musical based on the 1992 Disney animated feature film, is an enchanting story that brings the magical world of the Arabian Nights to life. Featuring seven new songs and unforgettable performances, this stunning Broadway production delivers an incredible theatrical experience that will make you fall in love with this classic story all over again.
For many years, Alan Menken has been one of the most recognized and influential composers on the musical theater and film stage. He is a Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe award winner who has composed music for a number of successful Disney animated films, including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.
He started his career as a musician and composed commercial jingles before finding success on the Broadway scene. His breakthrough came when he was paired up with playwright Howard Ashman for the 1979 musical God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, based on Kurt Vonnegut's novel.
He went on to score the 1989 Disney animated hit The Little Mermaid and then Beauty and the Beast, both of which earned him Oscars for Best Score. His toe-tapping, literate musical scores breathed new life into the once-dead genre and helped revitalize the movie musical.
The book for the stage production of Aladdin was written by Chad Beguelin, who also wrote lyrics to some songs specifically for this musical. Beguelin is an American playwright and lyricist who has worked on several Broadway shows, including The Wedding Singer and Elf the Musical.
The show resurrects three songs originally written by Menken and Ashman for the film, as well as four new ones. Beguelin and Menken also add some original music to these resurrected songs.
The show was a world-premiere in Seattle in July 2011. It went on to have a successful run on Broadway, winning a number of awards and receiving nominations for Best Musical and Best Original Score.
When Disney's animated feature Aladdin first hit the big screen in 1992, it was an uproarious and fast-paced film filled with rapid-fire stream of consciousness humor. Director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw tapped into that sense of humor for his production of this stage adaptation.
When the show finally hits Broadway, it will join a long list of animated musicals that have been converted to the stage. Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Newsies and Tarzan are among them.
But the enduring appeal of these productions isn't so much their musical numbers, as their clever but unpretentious wit and word play. Nicholaw has become the go-to for bringing classic musical comedy to the stage. His recent credits include The Book of Mormon (Tony Award-Director), Mean Girls, The Prom and Disney's Aladdin.
The visual sign systems of contemporary directors create a wide range of meanings for the audience, and this is affected by choices such as the design and colour of the scenery and costumes, the size and location of the theatre, whether it is dark or light.
Costumes convey information about a character's personality, age, status, occupation, nationality and mood. For example, Usnavi (Daniel Cancel), the shy young man of the neighborhood, wore floral shirts to symbolize his shy, dreamy soul.
In The Heights, the BFA costume design students worked to accurately portray each character. Their work is important because it provides insight into how to represent people in a way that's realistic and true to their culture. They learned that it takes a lot of research, time and effort to design an outfit that is accurate to its character's personality.
Aladdin, based on the 1992 Disney animated film of the same name, is an adventure that transports the audience into a magical world. It's a story about a street urchin who finds his place in the world when he is given a lamp that allows him to travel to the Cave of Wonders.
Tim Rice, a lyricist and composer, is a co-founder of the musical writing team Andrew Lloyd Webber and Rice, which has produced some of the most popular shows in the world. They have penned scores for hits such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Aida, Evita and The Lion King.
The Broadway production of Aladdin, directed by Casey Nicholaw, opened on March 20 to mostly positive reviews. It received five Tony Award nominations.
